Z Ending Explained and Plot Details

The movie opens with a child named Joshua (played by Jett Cline) talking to his toys. At breakfast, Joshua’s father, Kevin (played by Sean Rogerson), leaves in a hurry after talking to his wife Beth (Elizabeth) (played by Keegan Connor Tracy). After that, Beth sends Joshua to school with their neighbor Georgia. At school, Joshua draws in his notebook instead of paying attention in class. At school we saw Josh talking to someone again. At night, Joshua is seen talking to someone and this time his parents see it. Josh had a habit, when he slept, he would leave his door open and say “good night mom and dad” before going to sleep.

The next day, after sending Josh off to school, Beth goes to her mother’s house. His mother was sick and old. But his sister Jenna (played by Sarah Canning) doesn’t come beacuse of their unhealthy relationship. Later, at dinner, Joshua talks about his imaginary friend, which his parents dismiss as a joke. His parents ask for the imaginary friend’s name and Josh secretly writes Z on a piece of paper. Despite Beth’s concerns about the negative impact Josh’s playtime with Z has, Kevin still thinks it’s a joke. Josh plays the game “The Floor is Lava” in his room, which worries Beth even more. Josh begs his mother to close the door at night because Z likes the dark.

Josh’s pet dies at this point, and it seems that Z may be involved. Josh later says that he knows about the afterlife and souls, which doesn’t bode well for him. His parents suspect that Z is behind this unusual behavior. The next morning, Josh decides not to go to school but Beth arranges to send him. Beth was cleaning and she saw a glowing sticker on a train in the storeroom. At school, the teacher complains about Josh’s behavior, but Kevin isn’t concerned. Josh claims that this was all Jade’s suggestion. Because of these unusual things, they take Josh to a therapist.

A doctor named Seager (played by Stephen McHattie) tells them that spending more time with Josh can help him overcome his loneliness and get rid of his imaginary friend.

But Josh runs away, mentions Z’s name, and the Doctor seems to recognize it. Beth later catches Josh making a sandwich for Z, and the next morning when they find a eated sandwich, they realize that something bad might be in the house. Following the doctor’s advice, they decide to take Josh to a play area, where he plays near a tunnel. Beth notices that someone is in the tunnel with Josh. Suddenly Josh falls from the tunnel, but it was just a prank and an idea of Z. The next day Beth’s mother died. Then she meets her sister and expresses her feelings.

On the other hand, no one was willing to play beacuse of Josh’s behavior. Which annoys Beth. Beth tries to administer the imaginary pill through food and realizes this Josh stops eating anything. Somehow arrangements were made to feed Josh, but the condition was that Beth had to try the food first. So does Beth. The next day Beth and Jenny go to their mother’s house and while cleaning they find some video tapes. On one of those tapes, Beth finds herself calling Z. She burned all the tapes. On the other hand, her husband was covering Z’s painting on the wall with color paint.

Josh was sick and Kevin thought his illness was a side effect of the medication and he got mad at Beth. At night Beth finds the words Z and Imagine Z through an alphabet toy. Then in the bath Beth said Imagine Z and in the next scene she saw Z sitting in front of her. Seeing this, she screamed. Kevin comes here and calms her down. The next day, when Beth and her sister go to her mother’s house, it is revealed that Z was not there because of Josh. Z was there because Z liked Beth. Then Josh’s condition worsens and they go to the doctor again.

Here the Doctor reveals her past to Beth and how she overcomes Z’s imagination. Also, Z wants to marry Beth and he waits until Beth is older. At home, Z comes out of the painting and attacks Kevin. Beth comes home to find the house on fire. Inside the house, Kevin is badly beaten by Z and the writing on the wall is Playtime with Z. After experiencing a number of frightening events, Beth decides to end Z, and this requires her to place Josh at Jenna’s house. Next Beth arrives at her mother’s house and Z is already there. Doctor Sagar also comes there to help her but she refuses.

As he was leaving and said Beth has made Z and she can finish her off. Beth stays with Z at night. She hides a phone for safety but the next morning her phone is broken and it was done by Z. Beth and Z play hide and seek at night. Z shows Beth a vision where she sees her father’s dead body behind a gate. As a child Z provokes Beth against her father, which may lead to her death. Z then asks Beth to take their relationship to the next level and gives her a wedding dress from her mother. Beth puts on the costume and plays with Z, but secretly calls her friend Jenna for help.

Jenna learns that Josh is missing and eventually finds him on the train tracks. Z called Josh out there to play, presumably to kill him. The police and doctors are informed about Z’s behavior and they come to the house. Beth decides to take her own life in hopes of ending Z’s influence on her. Jenna saves Josh and Z disappears as Beth hangs herself. In the end, Josh was safe and no longer under Z’s imagination.

Beth is somehow saved and they all sit down for dinner together – Josh, Jenna and Beth. Beth was now paralyzed and Jenna was feeding her. Josh says goodnight to everyone before going to bed, and surprisingly, he says goodnight to Z too. The movie ends here.

Was Z real? What Happened at the End, Conclusions

The discussion now turns to theories and conclusions about the movie. It’s not clear if Z is dead because Josh says goodnight to him at the end of the movie. It is possible that Z has trapped Beth, but it is also unclear whether Z is real or Beth’s imagination. Beth may have had some traumatic experiences as a child, and she imagined that Z had overcome that.

The back story is not clear, but it is similar to the movie “The Babadook”. The first half of the movie was interesting and had a lot of scares, but the second half was dull. The next part, if there is one, should provide more information about the back story. The doctor knew about Z but didn’t tell Beth until later. Jenna became responsible for taking care of Beth and Josh and the responsibility fell on her.
