Insidious Ending Explained
At the beginning of the movie, we see a woman named Renai (played by Rose Byrne). She was looking at childhood photos from an old photo album. His son Dalton (played by Ty Simpkins) arrives there and starts watching the film. Dalton asks about his father’s picture but his mother says his father is reluctant to take pictures and doesn’t have one. Renai puts the album on the bookshelf but an unknown force throws it away. She thought it was done by her kid and she scolded Dalton. Renai was alone at home and suddenly she heard her little daughter crying. She tries to calm him down but the baby keeps crying.
Later, at night, Dalton falls down a ladder while searching for a painting in the attic. He saw a figure there and started screaming. Renai and his father Josh Lambert (played by Patrick Wilson) rush to him aid but he doesn’t say what scare him, only say that he fell. He suffered a minor head injury due to the fall. His father took him to his room. The next morning, he wasn’t waking up when Josh woke him up. His parents took him to the hospital and the doctor said he was in a coma. But the doctor is unable to tell the reason as all his tests are fine.
The next scene is 03 months later and Dalton is still in a coma. While practicing singing, Renai hears strange noises from the baby’s room through a baby monitor, the volume increases and the baby started crying. Her second son, named Foster (played by Andrew Astor), wants to change his room because Dalton drifts off in his sleep and he’s scared, but Renee ignores him. The family experiences strange events, such as security alarms being triggered and doors opening by themselves. Renai sees a man in her baby’s room and calls Josh but finds nothing when Josh gets there. Renai dreams of Dalton with a demon and sees a dark figure outside his room and she screams.
Renai tells Josh that this house is cursed, and she doesn’t want to live there anymore. Dalton remains in a coma, and Renai finds bloody handprints on his bed. The family is experiencing many mysterious events, and Renai thinks the house is occupied. The family moves into a new house, and Josh’s mother Lorraine (played by Barbara Hershey) helps them with the move. Renai experiences something strange in the new house and sees a baby ghost. The door to the room opened and closed by itself. She calls a priest and tells Josh that the devil has followed them from their old house to the new house. Lorraine supports Renai’s claim and says she dreamed of the devil.

She also asked Satan what he wanted. Satan replied that he needed Dalton. During their conversation, Lorraine notices the same demon on Josh’s back. At the same time, they hear strange noises coming from Dalton’s room. When they get there, they find the room in disarray and Dalton has fallen from his bed. After that, Lorraine calls a paranormal investigator named Ellis (played by Lynn Shaye), when she arrives and feels the presence of a demon coming for Dalton. Ellis explains that Dalton’s state of health is not due to any disease but to his unique ability to transport his soul to another world, trapping him in a state of purgatory.
The demon is after Dalton because it wants to possess him and enchant him. The house is not haunted, but Dalton’s presence attracts the demon. Josh goes to Dalton’s room and asks for a clue. He finds a sketchbook and notices a monster sketch among Dalton’s other drawings. Alice and her partner contact Dalton and he tells them of a man with a fiery face and fears that the devil can hear them. Suddenly, the miraculous activity begins, Dalton gets out of his bed and throws things around. Other demons appear, and Renai is captured by one of the demons but Josh saves her. Elsie tries to remove the demon from Dalton.
Everything later returns to normal but Dalton is still in a coma. In a recorded episode of what happened earlier, Satan is seen standing behind Dalton. He wanted to possess him. Lorraine tells Josh about his childhood fear of an old lady spirit. At first, Lorraine ignores it but in a picture, she sees the old lady devil with Josh and learns that the lady is trying to possess him. Then she saved Josh with Alice’s help. Now Alice reveals that now only Josh can save Dalton. He could go to another world and bring Dalton.
What Happened at the End of Insidious?
Alice warns him that he should keep everything a secret because if the devil knows this, they too can possess Josh and come to this world. Josh decided to do it. Then Josh goes to another world to find Dalton. At the same time, he faced many demons. Walking forward, Josh finds Dalton in Purgatory, with Dalton’s legs chained. Dalton tells Josh that a demon has imprisoned him there. Josh frees Dalton from the chains, but Satan notices him. Later, the demon attacks Josh and he somehow manages to escape with Dalton, but they are surrounded by demons. Renai calls them to help and Josh drops Dalton at home so he can return to his body.
Dalton searches for his body while Satan tries to stop him. Eventually, Dalton reaches his body and Josh encounters an old woman from his childhood, but she yells at him to leave her alone. The next scene reveals that Josh is standing outside the house and the old spirit is inside. Both Josh and Dalton returned safely and everyone was happy for them. Alice and her partner are about to return to their home. For the last conversation, Alice approaches Josh and starts talking to each other.

Alice takes a picture of Josh while talking and here we learn that the old woman’s spirit has taken over Josh’s body. Josh’s soul is trapped in another world. When Josh realizes that Alice knows who he is, he attacks Alice and strangles her to death. Renai hears Alice’s voice and goes to check and finds Alice’s dead body with Josh’s photo that she captured. But the image was of an old woman’s soul. At the very end, when Renai is looking at the picture, Josh appears behind her. As a result, Renai panics, and the movie ends with this scene.
